JC: Just reading this page before adding the information about rabbits. Do we have evidence for the suggested link between pagans and fur, or is it (as I suspect) a reenactorism. I thought the difference in the amount of fur, was availability. JC: There is evidence of furs been used throughout the early medieval period, however these tend to be those of a short haired variety such as ermine, otter etc. Certainly not the long guard haired varieties we see on many re-enactors, where we see a kind of fashion race to see the most exotic furs used with long guard hairs, including raccoon dog (an imported species) and heaven knows what else. There is a large difference between say otter and an arctic fox. We should emphasize that short hair is for clothing, long hair is for bedding.
