John and his wife Roz were the founders of Dahrg de Belne in Birmingham in 1992 after leaving the Mercia Sveiter which they'd joined in 1988, and played a pivotal role in the development of the Living History Encampment and the display of period crafts in the society. John made a huge contribution to the early Living History displays in the society, and was the LHE officer for several years as well as remaining an active though occasional combatant and archer into the 2010s.

John was also an accomplished guitarist, and could occasionally be persuaded to play at events as the evenings lengthened. In their support of Bells Farm in Birmingham (a listed C16th farmhouse) during and after its restoration, they taught traditional crafts and also hosted several society meetings on the site.
