The 2019 society training weekend will be held at the Abberley Hall School Worcester WR6 6DD

How to find us

By Road

From M5 North, take the A38 which becomes a dual carriageway, towards Droitwich Spa. At the first roundabout continue on the A38, and after approximately 1 mile take the slip road signed A4133 to Ombersley and Tenbury. Continue on the A4133 to Holt Heath and at the 'T' junction turn right onto the A443 to Great Witley. After passing the Hundred House on the right, continue along the A443 towards Tenbury Wells for 0.5 mile. Abberley Hall is situated on the left hand side, through the ornamental gates just before the brow of the hill.

From M5 South, take the A449 towards Kidderminster, continue on the A449 for approximately 5.5 miles and the take the A4133 to the left into Ombersly. At the roundabout take the first exit signed Holt Heath and Tenbury. Continue on the A4133 to Holt Heath and at the 'T' junction turn right onto the A443 to Great Witley. After passing the Hundred House on the right, continue along the A443 towards Tenbury Wells for 0.5 mile. Abberley Hall is situated on the left hand side, through the ornamental gates just before the brow of the hill.

By Rail

Kidderminster Railway Station is approximately 25 minutes by taxi. Worcester Railway Station is approximately 25 minutes by taxi. Droitwich Spa Railway Station is approximately 30 minutes by taxi. Birmingham International Railway Station is approximately 45 minutes by taxi. By Public transport ...Nearest train station Worcester Foregate street then by 758 Tenbury Wells bus from Worcester Crowngate get off at Flello’s shop and walk up the hill.

Carparking

The primary carparking is the at the rear beside the playing fields. Please leave the top of this carpark as far as the flower beds/small pavilion for caravans. There is room for about 60 cars here is we park closely. If weather is good we can park under the trees beyond the car park. There is further overflow parking beside the sports hall and right hand side of the drive. If you are visiting for the day please use the carpark at the front of the school or on the right hand side of the drive. During arrival on Friday and departure on Monday we will operate a one way system entering by the front gate, unloading from the track beside the camping field and then leaving through the back gate to re-enter by the front and park your vehicle. Please do not drive onto the sports pitches. There is more camping for families at the top of the carpark beside the cricket nets on the croquet lawn (behind the pavilion marked on the map).

Housekeeping

Fires

All fire should be raised except those in the woodland school area where there is an oven (which we can use) and various shelters. This area is in use by extreme Viking on Saturday night. The usual fire safety rules apply. Wood will be provided for fires beside the small pavilion on the lower pitch close to the main camping field. We have permission for a bonfire firing for pottery in woodland school too.

Water

Drinking water points are at the small pavilion on the lower field and on the large pavilion on the main fields. There is also a water point on the small groundsmen’s hut by the car park.

Electrical points

Electrical points are on the main pavilion and on the small groundsman’s hut by the carpark. There are electrical points in the sports hall.

Waste Disposal

There will be a skip for waste recycling beside the track on the lower camping field. Please ensure food packaging waste is suitably cleaned for recycling. Please leave the site tidy as it was found. Anyone who would like to be on a site clearance team on Monday please contact me over the weekend.

Services

Tesco, petrol stations and many shops and pubs and restaurants in Stourport on Severn. There will be a catering van on site from Friday lunchtime providing breakfasts (from approx. 8.00am) lunches and early evening meals till 7pm and hot drinks and food all day. See separate post /email for menu. The nearest pub is the The Bell 2 miles walk away. Yddraig have agreed therefore be organising a bar with bottled and can beer on site. Beer will only be available in return for raffle tickets purchased from John Baguley’s van. More details to follow on this...

Indoor camping

There is only a very small amount of indoor camping in the mezzanine racketball court upstairs in the sports hall. This has all been booked already so I can take no further bookings. If you have already ben notified by me (Kendall Kinrade) then your place is assured. Anyone providing craft training wishing to sleep in the sports hall may do so but may need to clear away bedding during the day.

Toilets

The toilets on the main camping fields and portaloos . There are also toilet, wash facilities and showers in the main pavilion and the sports hall. Please leave these as you found them.

Caravans

Hardstanding for caravans and campers in on the left beside the sports hall. The sports hall carpark is reserved for caravans so please do not park there unless with a camper. Overflow for this space is at the top of the main carpark between the flowerbeds and groundman’s hut and the school buildings.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on the site . They must be kept under control and all mess cleared from the site. The usual society rules about dogs apply.

Safety Kit

All members are reminded that the usual H&S rules of the Vikings apply at this event. Anyone involved in combat training must attend with basic safety equipment of gloves with 6mm leather (or equivalent) and helmets. All other equipment must be safe (no splinter shields or burred weapons) Nearest A&E is Worcester Royal Hospital it is about 12 miles follow A443 for Worcester and follow signs for Hospital. Take care moving around the site there are steep slopes fringing the campsite. There are school staff living on the site so please respect the "No Vikings" signs. There is also a public right of way crossing the site (although away for the outdoor training) so be vigilant for members of the public and stop training if the RTTc leading request you to.

Cans Raffle

It’s a long walk to anywhere from Abberley Hall. So a raffle for cans of lager, real beer, Magners cider and Dark fruit cider. You will need to buy a raffle ticket for a £1 during the afternoon or evening. Each ticket entitles you to a single prize draw for any can. E.g. 5 tickets wins you 5 cans! John “Bagsy” Baguley has generously offered to run the raffle out of his van which will be positioned at the bottom of the main carpark. Find him for raffle tickets and cans. We will put a fire pit and a sail awning near Bagsy’s van here for people to gather away from the main camping. Please dispose of cans properly the site must be left clean as we find it.

Swimming pool

Abberley Hall has a private swimming pool which is open usually to members only over the Easter weekend the pool will be available to members of The Vikings. For those wishing to use the pool the cost is £3.50 per person per session on an honesty basis. There will be an honesty box placed in reception. Please be aware that member will also be using the pool. Needless to say swimming is not part of STW and at your own risk and swimmers must be accompanied by one other person. There is no restriction on timings between 0600 hrs to 2000 hrs. Abberley Swimming Club members may also be using the pool and will use the day car park by the main house.

Children's play area

There is a children’s play ground behind the sports hall which is free for the use of the Vikings.

Out of bounds areas

The main buildings and gardens immediately around them are out of bounds to the Vikings as is the clocktower ( you’ll see that first as you arrive). The climbing walls on the main buildings are also out of bounds to members.
