The earliest maille shirts from our period are relatively short, not unlike a T-shirt, with short sleeves (above the elbow) and reaching only just below the waist.
The c.10th Gjermunbu find had short sleeves and was barely lower than the waist.
English manuscripts show ‘dagged’ edges around the sleeves and hem of some short-sleeved waist- or thigh-length mail shirts.
