Talk:Seax
Is the bit about "scramaseax" correct? I thought (fuzzily) it was a hap. leg. and likely to mean "knife for food"? +Wiglaf (talk)
Yes, I believe it's correct. The only literary reference(s) to a "scramaseax" is when they are used in attempts to kill kings. I may well have further info in one of the (many) email chains I've saved. Benedict (talk)
wikipedia tells me it's from gregory of tours, so not even OE, which is also worth pointing out! :-) +Wiglaf (talk)
Should sheaths for them be on the same page, or a separate item, linked to?+Wiglaf (talk)
I've added a linked separate page on seax sheaths (and done the same with sword scabbards). Benedict (talk)
Needs adding
- general description
- period notes/links
- info on grip materials
- metalwork on handle to be avoided
I've added a couple of typologies of seaxes. Benedict (talk)
Types of seax
I wonder whether it's worth turning the basic seax, hadseax and langseax into separate pages, as it's getting rather long otherwise. Though I fear a website on "basic seax" may attract the wrong clientele... Benedict (talk)
