Arming cap

With the increase in armour during the eleventh century, chainmail coifs and padded arming caps under the helmet became common. The coif should be separate from the mail shirt it goes with – full chainmail ‘hoodies’ only appear in the twelfth century.
An arming cap follows the same design as ordinary linen coifs, but should be padded in the same way as a gambeson.
