This is the old page!!!
Pouches can be made of leather or material and are usually hung from the belt.
Types of pouch
Coin pouches
Pouches may be simple undecorated circles of linen or, more commonly, leather.
This style of pouch is particularly appropriate as a small coin-pouch with a selection of reproduction coins. These were usually plain and simple, as they appear to have been worn on a long drawstring around the neck, under the tunic.
"Birka" pouches
This information is no longer valid!!
Single-hanger box-pouches made of leather may be decorated with studs or tooling and are particularly appropriate for higher-status Vikings. Although the single-strap rectangular or bell/lyre-shaped pouches are often referred to as "Birka pouches", examples also exist from western Viking Age sites, including the Dublin area. The pouches found in Birka and elsewhere are at most 5 inches or 12cm wide. They were usually highly decorated or fitted with expensive plates and studs.
Unacceptable pouches
Dual-hanger semicircular pouches and ‘kidney’ pouches are re-enactorisms and should be avoided.
Large pouches
Pouches used in the early medieval period tended to be relatively small. If you need to carry so much stuff around with you that you need a pouch 8-9" across (20-22cm), you should make yourself a satchel instead.
