Basic dress

Basic dress construction is used for both the "standard" underdress and overdress, and is essentially a floor(ish) length overtunic or undertunic.
The main differences are:
- length - a dress should be "floor length". However, practicality allows that they may be slightly shorter or worn slightly hitched up to avoid dragging in wet grass at events and prevent both discomfort and potential damage to the garment or personal injury
- number of gores - while it's preferable for a gusseted tunic to have gores at the front and back, as well as at the sides, this is less essential in a dress, which may only have gores at the sides.
Please refer to How to make a tunic for instructions on how to make a dress.
